A Walk-Through of Kelsea Ballerini’s Tattoos From the Singer Herself

Kelsea Ballerini's tattoo collection may not be as robust as boyfriend Chase Stokes's many designs, but they're still worth checking out. While her latest piece of ink - a delicate hummingbird located on her back - has caught many fans' eyes, you might be surprised to learn this is far from her first tattoo. The Grammy-nominated musician has been slowly building up a meaningful tattoo collection that now boasts six designs - many of which she got in 2023 alone. Though Ballerini got her first tattoo in 2014 in a somewhat haste (more on that later), she's made sure that all her designs serve as an authentic reflection of her personal and artistic growth. This explains the extended hiatus between her newer and older designs. "I took a break," Ballerini tells PS in an interview. "Then [I] made some life changes in the last year and a half, and got it," she explained, referring to the minimalist wave that she got on her hip earlier this year. When asked whether she'd ever consider potentially covering her existing tattoos or removing them, she says, "I believe in no regrets." Even as she embarks on a new era of her body art, she says, "I stand by my life. And so I made the decision to get this when I made it," adding, "I think if things no longer suit you, you're allowed to change your mind." Ahead, we have rounded up all of Ballerini's tattoos along with their meanings. From capturing her sentimental memories to celebrating her personal and musical milestones, read on to learn more about the country star's growing ink collection.

The Revival of Goth Makeup – Plus How to Create the Look

Despite what Janis Ian taught you about the high-school cafeteria in "Mean Girls," goths are no longer relegated to the back corner of the lunchroom near the sexually active band geeks. Goth culture, particularly goth makeup, has found its way to the plastics table - or at least the cultural mainstream. Between all of us living in the Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker rocker-chic era, makeup tutorials on soft-goth makeup reaching hundreds of thousands of views on TikTok, and even the resurgeance of the look on the popular Netflix series "Heartbreak High," it's safe to say that goth makeup has made a much-awaited comeback. Here's what you need to know about the trend so that you can sit with it. What Is Goth Makeup? "Traditionally, we know goth makeup to be mostly pale skin, dark smoky eyes, and black or deep red lips," makeup artist Ashley Rebecca tells PS. "People also add signs and symbols to their eye makeup, such as upside-down crosses or drops that resemble blood, to really drive the goth theme home." But like other makeup trends (we're looking at you, '90s makeup!), today's goth makeup is inspired by its classic predecessor with some modern twists. "Despite popular belief, it's pretty easy to take goth makeup and make it a tad more mainstream," Rebecca says. "Traditional goth makeup touts a paler complexion, but that doesn't always need to be the case now if you play up your eyes and lips." Contrast is key when creating this look, so as long as you keep that in mind, you can take tons of creative liberties. What Is Soft Goth Makeup? If you don't want to dive head first into the skinny brow and jet-black eyeshadow of it all, soft goth makeup is a slightly less intense version of the trend that can almost feel a little romantic. "Soft goth makeup is about adding an alternative edge to your look and not just wearing makeup to enhance your appearance," makeup artist Gabrielle Alvarez says. "It's more about using makeup to express yourself." With soft goth makeup, Alvarez says that she loves a dark liner around the eyes or lips. "That plus a chunky, spider-y lash with a cool-toned contoured cheek is perfection," she says. With soft glam makeup looks, don't be afraid to play with color; you can achieve the essence of the trend by choosing one feature to emphasize. "Opt for something easy, like your eyeshadow or lipstick," Alvarez says. Goth Makeup: Products You'll Need Still, if no one can pry your favorite goth glam looks from your Pinterest board no matter how hard they tried, you'll need a few products to recreate those looks. Black kohl eyeliner: The softer and more blendable the formula, the better for smoking out. Black eyeshadow: You'll need a black shadow, preferably matte, to set your liner and help diffuse any unwanted harsh edges. Bold lipstick: Think black, deep red, or purple tones. How to Create a Goth Makeup Look Step 1: Create your base. Forget the thick white foundation creams you can find at Party City. Today's goth makeup is more customizable than a stark white face. "You don't need to have a super-pale complexion to pull off the goth trend," Rebecca says. "It's OK to wear a foundation that matches your skin tone. You can choose to play up your eyes and lips in a way that still pays tribute to goth looks without it being as obvious." Step 2: Add some depth to your complexion. Rebecca notes that contour, blush, and highlighter haven't been utilized in traditional goth makeup looks in the same way that they've become a mainstay in our everyday makeup. But in goth makeup 2.0, we're seeing them make an appearance. Frosty white highlighter is commonplace, as is the trendy pop of blush under the eyes. Step 3: Play up your eyes. "The simplest way to create gothic-inspired makeup is going by the phrase: 'the darker, the better'," Rebecca says. She recommends using deep black eyeliner and shadow to create a smoky eye. To start, line your entire lash line (top and bottom) with your liner. Don't forget your waterlines. Then, using a small smudge brush or even your fingers, buff the liner up and out to cover more of your lid space. Once you have the general shape you want - this is totally up to you - take your black shadow on a flat shader brush and pack it on directly over your liner. This will lock in all your hard work and create an even deeper shade of black. Black shadow tends to have a lot of fallout, so using a clean, small fluffy brush without any product, gently blend out the edges until it creates a soft gradient effect on your lids. Step 4: Paint on your lip. There's no right or wrong way to wear gothic-inspired lipstick. Rebecca recommends experimenting with deep lipstick tones, from black to blood red and even purple. If you really want your eyes to be the star of the show, rather than picking a traditional pink- or brown-based nude, try a more gray- or purple-based nude, like a mauve or stone. And stick with matte finishes if you want to stay true to the trend. Our Favorite Goth-Makeup Inspiration Photos

Sorry, Taylor Swift: You Can’t Fix Him (No You Really Can’t)

If there's anything Taylor Swift's new album "The Tortured Poets Department" has taught me, it's that no one is immune to the fuckery that comes from being in a situationship. Not even Swift herself. Despite being a professed romantic, even Swift has been "down bad" for mediocre dudes with tattoos. But among the many relationship experiences Swift candidly alludes to throughout "TTPD," perhaps the most relatable lyric comes from track 11: "I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)." In it, Swift sings, "They shake their heads saying 'God help her' when I tell them he's my man. But your good lord doesn't need to lift a finger, I can fix him - no, really, I can." For anyone who's ever thought they could fix someone, and has since lived to tell the tale, you know all too well that it's a canon event. It allows women everywhere to attempt to fix someone only to eventually realize the hard way that people can't be fixed - not even the super hot Tinder match who swears they're "really into you." "If you want to be with someone that you think you can 'fix,' you are setting yourself up for disappointment," clinical psychologist Roxy Zarrabi, PsyD, says. "Pursuing a relationship with the hope that someone will change is similar to accepting crumbs and hoping for a meal that never arrives." Because you may read the above and still think "OK, but I can actually fix him," we had Dr. Zarrabi and four other relationship experts weigh in on whether it's actually possible to fix someone. Can You Fix Someone You're Dating? In the traditional sense, no. "The only thing in life that you have true control over is yourself," psychotherapist Ronald Hoang says. "You cannot (as much as you hope you can) enforce change upon your partner." If the problem you have with the person you're dating is a part of their core self, like their values, religious beliefs, political stance, or a basic personality trait, you likely won't have any luck "fixing" them. "People will only change through their own motivation to do so." You may, however, be able to improve relationship issues, like communication skills, the way conflict is handled, and coping mechanisms, as long as you and your partner are willing to work on them together, sex therapist Brittney Fortin, LMFT, says. This is contingent on if your partner wants to work on it, though. "Someone cannot be fixed unless they agree to be fixed," says Nicholette Leanza, a therapist at LifeStance Health. "People will only change through their own motivation to do so." Bottom line: No matter how great you are or whatever your "certain skill set" is, as Swift refers to, it's not possible to fix someone who doesn't want to be fixed. What to Do If You Want to Fix the Person You're Dating The simple solution is to find someone who doesn't need to be fixed. You are likely not compatible with someone who you think needs to be fixed in order to be your person. "This is not only unfair to you, but also to your partner, who deserves to be with someone who accepts them as they are," Dr. Zarrabi says. But because it's not always that simple, try to pin down what exactly you want to change about the person you're seeing. Is it something that's inherently a part of who they are? Or is it a behavior that can be changed? If it's a behavior, know that they won't "fix" anything if they don't want it to be fixed. But you can positively influence their behavior with your presence, support, and love, clinical psychologist Christina Iglesia, PsyD, says. That said, if you find yourself repeatedly feeling drawn to fixing people you date, it may have more to do with you than it does with them. "Consider the role you are playing in this dynamic, what purpose this role serves for you, and what past painful experiences you've had that may have shaped this pattern for you," Dr. Zarrabi says. A good place to explore why you may feel the need to fix your partners is in therapy. "Sometimes we fix others because we equate love with someone needing us. Sometimes we try and fix others because we grew up in codependent relationships and therefore believe it is our responsibility to save people from themselves. Sometimes we attempt to fix others because we would rather focus our mental energy on fixing someone else's issues than fixing our own," Dr. Igleisa says. Whatever the case, fixing someone is not worth the time and energy 99 percent of the time. So even if Swift made "fixing" someone seem cool again, "focus on being the right partner for yourself," Leanza says. It's way less stressful. Do Sunscreen Patches Actually Work? I Tried Them

A few months ago, I noticed what appeared to be melasma forming on the right side of my face. I'm fairly diligent when it comes to applying sunscreen, especially when it comes to my face because it's prone to becoming littered with freckles after only a short period of time in the sun. Although I also wear a hat when I'm outdoors whenever possible, it seemed as though I wasn't able to fully escape the sun's wrath. Recently, I heard about patches you could apply to your face to block UV rays, and my interest was immediately piqued. They sounded great because you don't need to reapply them throughout the day, they're sweat and water resistant, and they help add an extra layer of protection to cover my melasma. But do they work? First, I tapped an expert to find out. "I like using sunscreen patches in patients with melasma or hyperpigmentation (brown patches on the cheeks and the forehead), Jaqueline Watchmaker, MD, board-certified dermatologist with U.S. Dermatology Partners Phoenix, tells PS. "Patients with melasma and hyperpigmentation can use all the sun protection they can get." However, Dr. Watchmaker notes that the UV patches have some downsides, especially since they come in sheets and don't often cover your entire face. "Areas not covered by the patch are still at a risk of sunburn," she says. Keep scrolling to read my full review of the Franz SunShield Peptide Patch ($25, for a pack of 5) and find out why they've become a permanent part of my sun-protection routine. About the Franz SunShield Peptide Patch This product is a UPF 50+ sun protection patch. It promises all-day UV protection. It's water-resistant and sweat-resistant. The key ingredients include a hyaluronic acid complex to hydrate the skin, glycerin to prevent water loss, and peptides to smooth fine lines. What I Like About the Franz SunShield Peptide Patch The first time I tested one of these eye patches, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I'm used to applying sunscreen all over my face, but these were a lot different. I actually wasted a couple of the patches trying to figure out how to use them, but once I got the hang of it, I was hooked. At first, it's pretty apparent you're wearing something on your face, but once you apply the peptide serum and let it sit for a few minutes, you're set. Although I have sensitive, acne-prone skin, these don't make me break out the same way regular sunscreen does. Plus, once they've actually settled onto my face, they're essentially undetectable. These have honestly been a godsend for the melasma forming on my face. I can even manage to be in the sun for short periods of time without a hat - something I was never able to do before. How to Use the Franz SunShield Peptide Patch The brand recommends starting by cleansing and drying your skin. From there, remove the backing from each patch and then apply it directly underneath your eyes - similar to where you'd apply an eye mask. Then, remove the top layer of the protective film and apply the peptide essence on top of each patch. When you want to remove them, the brand says all you need to do is roll up the edge of the patch with your fingertips and peel it off. Whenever I use these patches, I follow the instructions perfectly for application. However, when it comes to removing them, I occasionally have to use tweezers to help me out because I have long fingernails and the edge can be difficult to grip. I usually put them on in the morning after applying the rest of my skin-care products. Once I put these on, I add SPF to the rest of my face. What to Consider Before Trying the Franz SunShield Peptide Patch One thing to consider is that these patches don't cover the entire face, so you'll still need to use SPF. I personally love to use them for extra coverage, especially when I have melasma developing. They can be a little tricky to figure out at first, so if you're having trouble, I'd suggest watching the video on the brand's website, which you can find here. Additionally, these patches are pretty pricey. At $25 for a pack, you're essentially paying $5 per application. For me, they're worth it because getting lasers or miconeedling to treat my melasma is a lot more expensive. That said, if you're diligent about swearing SPF and hats, you might be OK with skipping this product. Rating: Renee Rodriguez is a staff writer and social producer for PS.
