Judge Blocks Sandy Hook Parents From Alex Jones Payout

REUTERS/Mike SegarA federal bankruptcy judge on Thursday blocked efforts by the parents of a Sandy Hook victim to start collecting the $50 million they won in a lawsuit against conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.Earlier this month, lawyers for the parents of 6-year-old Jesse Lewis obtained an order from a Texas state judge allowing them to immediately start collecting assets from Jones’ company, Free Speech Systems, after the company’s bankruptcy reorganization failed. However, on Thursday, Southern District of Texas Judge Christopher Lopez put the brakes on those efforts when he said that the state judge’s ruling conflicted with federal bankruptcy law. Lopez sided with a new court-appointed trustee who had accused some Sandy Hook families of attempting a “value-destructive money grab” before he finished the sale of Infowars’ parent company.Read more at The Daily Beast.

No Donald, Barron Trump’s Peloton at Mar-a-Lago Is Not Off Limits to the Feds

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast / Getty In their latest push to toss out evidence in Donald Trump’s classified documents case, the former president’s lawyers complained Tuesday that the 2022 raid at Mar-a-Lago was “overly broad” and violated Trump’s rights because FBI agents dared to enter his son Barron and wife Melania’s rooms.“Our argument is that agents searched rooms that they had no probable cause to search…And that bears on the question of whether the search was impermissibly broad for Fourth Amendment purposes,” defense attorney Emil Bove said in a Tuesday hearing. “They searched the room where the president’s son kept his Peloton!,” he added, also noting that agents took medical records.Even Judge Aileen Cannon, the Trump-appointed jurist who has gone to great lengths to tilt the case in Trump’s favor, appeared skeptical about the argument. And, legal experts emphatically dismissed it, telling The Daily Beast that the FBI agents used standard operating procedure while executing the warrant and did not violate Trump’s Fourth Amendment rights.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Karen Read Was ‘Seething’ After Killing Cop Boyfriend, Prosecutor Says

Kayla Bartkowski/The Boston Globe via Getty ImagesKaren Read allegedly had nine drinks in three hours during a January 2022 blizzard bar crawl before prosecutors say she rammed her cop boyfriend with her SUV and left him to die while “seething in rage.”“What she’s doing is she’s getting shot glasses of vodka and then pouring them in the drink,” Assistant District Attorney Adam Lally told Norfolk Superior Court jurors in his closing argument on Tuesday, shortly before jurors began deliberating.Hours later, John O’Keefe, a 16-year veteran of the Boston Police Department, was found lying unconscious on a fellow officer’s snow-covered front lawn with a bleeding forehead contusion, swollen eyes, and initial stages of frostbite. As authorities descended upon the chaotic scene, Lally said, Read was screaming that her boyfriend’s death was all her fault, repeating, “I hit him. I hit him. Oh my God. Hunter Biden’s D.C. Law License Suspended After Gun Conviction

Kevin Dietsch/Getty Hunter Biden has been suspended from practicing law in Washington, D.C., after his federal conviction for lying on a gun application five years ago while abusing drugs. In a Tuesday order, the District of Columbia Courts of Appeals ruled that Biden’s conviction earlier this month on “serious crimes” should result in an immediate suspension “pending resolution of this matter.” The order added that the “Board of Professional Responsibility is directed to institute a formal proceeding to determine the nature of the offense and whether it involves moral turpitude” to result in his exclusion from the D.C. bar.Biden, 54, was found guilty earlier this month of knowingly lying on an October 2018 federal firearms application when asked whether he was addicted to drugs. The president’s son on Tuesday filed an official request for a new trial, arguing that his conviction “should be vacated” because the trial started before a circuit court issued a mandate denying his former appeal.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Justin Timberlake’s Lawyer Has Repped Hamptons Royalty

Sag Harbor Police DepartmentJustin Timberlake has been battling a sea of negative headlines after he was arrested last week for allegedly drug driving in the Hamptons amid his world tour. But the “Cry Me a River” singer may have put one foot right by hiring a local powerhouse attorney to the stars who has handled some similarly high-profile cases. Edward Burke Jr. is a Hamptons attorney who has previously represented Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, disgraced former Today Show host Matt Lauer, publicist Lizzie Grubman, and other famous clients. The son of a former state Supreme Court judge, Burke was a Suffolk County prosecutor before becoming a criminal defense attorney and a household name among legal types in the ritzy Long Island enclave.“In addition to being my lawyer, he was my confidant, my friend, and my psychiatrist,” Grubman, a New York “it” girl who spent 38 days in jail in 2022 after backing up her father’s SUV into a crowd outside a Hamptons nightclub, told The New York Times in 2004. “When I was crying in the middle of the night, and that was probably almost every night since the accident, Eddie was the one I called.”Read more at The Daily Beast.

How Buster Murdaugh’s Lawsuit May Be the Key to Solving a Murder Mystery

Photo Illustration by Erin O'Flynn/The Daily Beast/Getty ImagesThe alleged involvement of Alex Murdaugh’s only surviving son in the 2015 roadside murder of his former classmate has long been a lingering question mark over the infamous family’s tangled web of legal woes. This week, Buster Murdaugh finally fired back, filing a damning defamation lawsuit against Netflix and others who produced documentaries and news articles that, he says, “irreparably damaged” his reputation by insinuating he was involved in 19-year-old Stephen Smith’s death. But his decision to sue the companies he says accused him of “committing a crime of moral turpitude” may also be the key to figuring out what happened in the still-unsolved criminal case.“He is reigniting embers that were almost extinct, adding oxygen to it in terms of public interest,” Eric Bland, a lawyer representing the Smith family, told The Daily Beast. “Now, these media companies are going to fight tooth and nail to get new content. They want another season and Buster just handed it to them.”Read more at The Daily Beast.
