I’d Never Heard of Winlevi, but It’s Been a Game-Changer For My Acne

I've had acne-prone skin since I hit puberty. While it started as small, textured bumps, over the years the condition progressed to a combination of black and whiteheads that were always relatively easy to get rid of if I just left them alone or popped them (I know, I know). That is, until I turned 26. I had experienced hormonal acne before, but for some reason, that magical year was when my skin decided to kick it into overdrive. This resulted in cystic breakouts in places I didn't even know you could break out. From the middle of my chin to the sides of my lower jaw and even my neck, this new onset of pimples was not only incredibly unsightly but also deeply painful to the touch. It was the first time I started wondering if I should go to the doctor for my acne, but it became a nonnegotiable when I got engaged and starting planning a wedding. I needed to start my journey to clear skin. Thankfully, I was able to see one of the best dermatologists in the game, Michelle Henry, MD, FAAD, who prescribed me a new skin-care routine - the topical ointment Tretinoin 0.04%, a medicated face wash, and a new product called Winlevi. First introduced to the market for the treatment of acne in 2020, Dr. Henry described the latter as one of the best treatments for my hormonal bumps, and it has been lauded as such by numerous other doctors. As dermatologist Ted Lain, MD, FAAD, previously told PS, the easy-to-use cream targets oil production, reducing the amount of sebum that could effectively trigger breakouts. Was I excited about this product potentially changing the game for my acne? Yes. Then I saw the price - and almost opted out entirely. At more than $200, I was skeptical to invest in a cream I had never heard about. However, it's been about eight months of consistent use, and I can't see myself not using Winlevi in the future. Here's what to know about my experience. Winlevi Before and After Before Winlevi in September 2022 vs. a few months into using the cream, February 2024 My Winlevi Cream Experience I started my journey with the Winlevi cream in August 2023. For my regimen, I was told to use it all over in the mornings and then use tretinoin at night. At first I was a bit overzealous and would squeeze out more of the product than I needed, which would leave behind a white cast, so I started dotting a dime-sized amount to my entire face. This has helped not only with the ghostly appearance, but I have also found that it's allowed the one tube to last me months, which makes me feel much better about the initial price. Today, while my acne is not completely gone, I have noticed a significant reduction in the hormonal flare-ups that I was experiencing before. I'm no longer scared about touching my cheeks or neck in fear of aggravating a pimple that was taking up way too much real estate in the first place because, for the most part, the bumps are no longer there. When the odd one does show up, it doesn't grow to the point of being extremely painful. It's worth noting that I am using the cream in conjunction with other medical-grade products: the face wash, which has 10 percent sodium sulfacetamide (which targets bacteria on the skin), and tretinoin, another topical treatment. There are times when I take a break from the latter if I overdo it and my skin becomes sensitive; that is when I realize just how effective Winlevi is. Without the strong exfoliating properties of tretinoin, the Winlevi cream somehow still manages to keep my skin looking relatively clear from breakouts. It also doesn't cause any sensitivity when used by itself - another win for my sometimes easily-reactive skin. Typically, the most I see is some small, under-the-skin bumps left over from previous bouts of acne. Is Winlevi Worth It? It's been almost a year of using this product and I can honestly say that I have no plans to go back to the way life was before it. Eventually, I do want to get to the point where my skin's texture is as smooth as it is clear of acne, but for now, I finally feel like I've found a solid skin-care routine that I can rely on before I look into other options like lasers to address the rest of my concerns. Winlevi is a relatively new drug so there isn't a generic - and therefore, cheaper - version of it available to buy just yet, but if the price tag is too steep for you, there are some instances where it is covered by insurance (like if your particular treatment of acne is deemed medically necessary), which can help offset the cost. Now that I feel like I have this secret weapon, I will never go back to just randomly trying mattifying face creams and hope that they help with my oily, acne-prone skin. Winlevi feels about as valuable to me as gold right now, and with one of the most important days of my life coming up, it couldn't have come at a better time. Related: What Is Your Skin Type? “Ozempic Face” Is Real – Here’s What That Means

If you've been on the internet at all over the last few months, you've more than likely heard of the drug Ozempic. The brand name of the semaglutide medication is intended to be used by people with type two diabetes in order to improve their blood sugar levels and address appetite. In addition to its use for a host of other health concerns, Ozempic is reportedly being used off-label to help people lose weight in a short amount of time. Many have hinted at its popularity among celebrities over the last year, so much so that it's become somewhat of an open secret, with people like Oprah Winfrey and Sharon Osbourne weighing in. The former mentioned that she considered it during her "Oprah Daily's 'The Life You Want Class: The State of Weight'" panel, People Magazine reports. "Even when I first started hearing about the weight loss drugs, at the same time I was going through knee surgery, and I felt, 'I've got to do this on my own,'" Winfrey said at the event. "'Because if I take the drug, that's the easy way out.'" Osbourne recently commented on how she didn't necessarily want to lose as much weight as she did in the process of using the injections. "You can't stay on it forever," the star said on "Piers Morgan Uncensored." "I lost 42 pounds now and it's just enough." Ethics of the practice aside, some people who have used the drug for weight loss are noticing a few additional side effects once they stop taking it, namely: "Ozempic" face, the gaunt facial appearance some may experience post-injection. Think: hollowed cheekbones, sagging skin, and overall signs of aging. "'Ozempic face' refers to a loss of facial fat or subcutaneous adipose tissue, which can result in changes in the appearance of the face," dermatologist Michelle Henry, MD, FAAD, tells PS. "This can cause a sunken appearance." The meteoric rise in conversations surrounding Ozempic has subsequently resulted in accusations of "Ozempic face" flying at celebrities left and right. If you're curious about the latest discourse on the possible side effects of the drug, Dr. Henry explains why Ozempic face occurs as well as how it can be addressed here. Why Does "Ozempic Face" Happen? The answer as to why this sudden sagging happens is still unclear. "The drug works by mimicking the activity of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 or GLP-1, which regulates blood sugar levels and appetite," Dr. Henry says. "It is thought that prolonged stimulation of GLP-1 receptors in the body may interfere with the storage and metabolism of fat in certain areas of the body including the face." In other words, if the body is being forced to regulate blood sugar levels and appetite, it may not be able to get back to homeostasis normally, causing fat to be stored (or in some cases lost) improperly. However, Dr. Henry does note that the rapid loss of weight most likely causes Ozempic face once users stop taking the medication. How to Treat "Ozempic Face" On the plus side, there are ways to reverse "Ozempic face" (and that is if the phenomenon even occurs in the first place). "Some people may experience partial or complete reversal of the condition if they stop taking the medication," Dr. Henry says. "Other treatments that may help improve the appearance of the face include dermal fillers, a fat transfer, or surgical interventions such as facelifts or facial implants." There is a chance that you may not even get Ozempic face at all. But if you do, these solutions tend to be primarily cosmetic, so do note that they most likely will not be covered by insurance and can cost upward of thousands of dollars. Additionally, as with any other procedure, you will want to go to a board-certified doctor who can host a consultation to address your concerns and align with your expectations properly. "Ozempic Face" Example While your health choices are your own, it is imperative to understand Ozempic should be used under very specific circumstances and should in no way be used as a quick way to lose weight. "Ozempic is an FDA-approved medication for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and for weight loss in people with a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or greater who also have at least one weight-related health condition," Dr. Henry says. "While it can be an effective tool for weight loss, it is not a magic bullet and should be used as part of a comprehensive weight loss plan that includes a healthy diet and regular exercise." The shortage of Ozempic is indicative that its misuse is causing is another issue entirely, but if you're on the drug or are considering it and are concerned about Ozempic face, prevention is always better than a cure. So instead of worrying about the types of procedures you'd need to fix this issue but are struggling to lose weight, speak to a trusted health professional who can provide you with healthy and sustainable options for long-term (and safe) results. No, Sydney Sweeney’s Natural Hair Color Isn’t Blond

When she's not playing a character who has become rather . . . polarizing, to say the least, on the hit series "Euphoria," Sydney Sweeney is busy being a full-fledged beauty icon. Before she was on "Euphoria," Sweeney had actually been in the acting industry for quite some time. With roles on the Netflix series "Everything Sucks" as well as HBO's "Sharp Objects," Sweeney grew up in front of the camera and has amassed quite the loyal following since the start of her career. With fans now watching her every move, they take notice when she reveals a new hair color. She can pull off any look, but it makes you wonder: what is Sydney Sweeney's natural hair color? Though she's become known for her long, blond hair, you may be surprised to learn that it's not the shade she was born with. After some detective work, we learned that Sweeney is actually a natural brunette and seemed to dye her hair somewhere around 2018 during the height of "Sharp Objects." Though it's common for actors to dye their hair a rainbow of shades for work, she's stuck with the lighter hue pretty consistently ever since. To take a closer look at Sweeney's natural hair, keep scrolling.

Bora Bora Braids Will Make You Feel Vacation-Ready

Just when you thought protective styles couldn't get any cuter, here come Bora Bora braids. The hairstyle feels like a combination of some of our favorite hairstyles over the years, from box braids to goddess locs. It's become so popular that people are catching flights (yes, full-on air travel) to get the look. "Fly with me to get $1000 braids," content creator Crystal Nicole captioned a video of her journey on TikTok where she travels to Los Angeles to get the look. So, what are Bora Bora braids, you ask? Hairstylist Martika Cogdell tells PS, "Bora bora braids are a gorgeous lightweight style that is achieved using 100 percent human hair. This normally results in a very wavy texture to the look." The magic of Bora Bora braids lies in the fact that they look like the perfect cross between two protective styles: box braids and sew-ins. Ahead, Cogdell explains where Bora Bora braids originated from, as well as how you can get the look. What Are Bora Bora Braids? "Bora Bora braids started to trend after hairstylist Omobolanle Ajoa, also known as 'Bora,' created the look," Cogdell says. Since then, Ajoa has worked with countless celebrities like Lala Anthony, Tems, and more, who have all requested her now signature technique. "After her posts started going viral, countless braiders tried them out," Cogdell adds. "As a result, Bora Bora braids are all over social media. I've seen several people wear them on vacation, and they have even been making their way up and down runways during New York Fashion Week." How to Get Bora Bora Braids The process of getting Bora Bora braids is similar to that of goddess braids, but the amount of human hair used is different. This also impacts the maintenance of the style. "The human hair used in Bora Bora braids makes the style super lightweight," Cogdell says. "The installation process is the same as your average knotless braid, but using a wavy texture of bulk braiding hair creates its distinct look and featherlight feeling to the style." As for the maintenance of Bora Bora braids, you may find them to be a bit finicky, but the end result will always be worth it. "Before adding in any product, ensure that your braids are completely detangled to avoid any sort of matting," Cogdell says. After doing your due diligence, the first thing you should do is hydrate the hair. "Follow the spritz of water with a setting mousse and a leave-in conditioner of your choice," Cogdell says. "I wouldn't recommend using any gels or extra-hold mousse since these products contain high levels of alcohol, which will eventually lead to having very dry, stiff braids." Overall Bora Bora braids are a super versatile protective style that can be worn in a natural wavy pattern, down for a softer look, or curled using flexi-rods and hot tools. With proper maintenance, they can last more than two months. Ready for your own Bora Bora braids? Keep reading for some timely protective-style inspiration.

The “Broccoli Haircut” Is Taking Over Social Media

No shade to the vegetable, but we never would have thought that broccoli would be influencing the beauty space. Recently, however, people have been using the nutrient-packed food to perfect their freckles and even inspire their next haircut. Don't believe us? Please see the broccoli haircut. "Believe it or not, a big part of this started out from children's movies," celebrity hairstylist Rene Fris tells PS. (It's true, take a look at characters like Ralph in "Wreck It Ralph" or Dexter in "Chang Can Dunk" for proof.) "However, it's possible that animated characters with unique hairstyles could have contributed to the popularity of unconventional cuts like the broccoli haircut among younger audiences today." A quick Google search will show that it's a short hairstyle primarily seen on men, but broccoli cuts can work on anyone. They combine two popular hairstyles: taper fades and bowl cuts. If you're ready for a new look, Fris explains everything you should know about the broccoli haircut, ahead. What Is the Broccoli Haircut? If you're a fan of shaggy, slightly more undone-looking hairstyles, then the broccoli haircut is for you. "The look often results in a textured and slightly messy finish," Fris says. "It's achieved by cutting the hair in short, uneven layers that resemble the florets of a broccoli. The side can be completely buzz-cut short or shaved very close to the scalp (like a fade)." If you break the look down, it looks quite a bit like the combination of a bowl cut and a tapered fade - two hairstyles that are independently very popular. When you combine them, the resulting broccoli haircut feels like it was destined for greatness. How to Achieve a Broccoli Haircut When it comes to the broccoli haircut, you want to make sure that your stylist is well-versed in short hairstyles, as there are subtle differences that you may want to be aware of. "First thing you'll want to do is ask your hairdresser for a lot of texture and volume," Fris says. "You'll already be starting off with a shorter cut, but prioritize asking for uneven lengths - the ends of the hair should be cut to mimic the irregular shape of the vegetable." This hairstyle is particularly well-suited for curly hair, as the ringlets very closely mimic the heads of a piece of broccoli naturally. However, if you have straighter hair, Fris recommends playing around with styling products. "Use volumizing products like the Sachajuan Ocean Mist ($38) and scrunch the hair to emphasize texture," he says. This is important if you prefer to keep more hair along the sides of your head, as this will help the entire style look more cohesive. Ready for your broccoli haircut era? Keep reading to get inspiration for the style to save for your next appointment.

Taurus Tattoos To Save For Inspiration

If there were one zodiac sign most likely to fall in love and become convinced that a couple's tattoo is a good idea, it would most likely be a Taurus. Born between April 20 and May 20, those who fall under the sign are well-known for being stubborn and headstrong. Their ability to stand steadfast in their decisions is typically what makes a Taurus immediately recognizable. However, they also tend to appreciate the finer things in life, which is why they would be big fans of Taurus tattoos. Whether it's a Taurus constellation tattoo, a design strictly inspired by the zodiac symbol, or a portrait of their animal symbol, the bull, Taurus tattoo ideas can be dainty and abstract or bold and hyperrealistic. The choice is entirely personal and there is no wrong way to go about getting an astrology tattoo. Taurus celebrities like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson have gotten designs inspired by the zodiac (his ink features a straightforward portrait of the bull), while others have gotten Taurus-inspired ink (like Olivia Wilde did in honor of her son Otis). You can even take a page out of Adele's playbook and go the planetary route - the singer has a portrait of Saturn on her wrist. Still, if you're set on getting a new tattoo but just need a little inspiration, we rounded up the best examples we could find. Whether you just want a dainty, one-word design or a Taurus symbol tattoo that's colorful and eye-catching, there's something here for everyone.

This 6-Year-Old Is Already an SFX Makeup Prodigy

Image Source: Courtesy of Jarell Patton At just 6 years old, Dakota Patton has already garnered praise from some of the most esteemed brand founders and media professionals in the entertainment industry. "You're incredible," Danessa Myricks told Patton as she kneeled to get down to her eye level at the 2024 Makeup Show. "You're really, really smart, and you're really, really talented," talk show host Steve Harvey also said to her during an interview. Yes, you read that correctly. At 6, Patton is perhaps the youngest special effects makeup artist to reach her level of caliber; she's affectionately known on social media by her followers as the princess of SFX. Dakota's father, Jarell, tells PS her interest in makeup started about three years ago, when she was only 3. During a family movie night, where they watched "The Dark Knight," Dakota became fixated on painting herself as The Joker. After some convincing, she convinced them to take her to Party City for makeup supplies and help her set her in the bathroom. If nothing else, he thought, it'd make a funny TikTok video - but what happened took him by surprise. "From her color coordination to the way she recreated the details, everything was spot on," he says. After watching Dakota recreate that makeup magic for both Pennywise and Venom Jarell was convinced of her talent. "YouTube videos made me feel like I could create the makeup looks," Dakota says. "When I first started watching them I would look at Madeyewlook [real name Alexys Fleming]'s page a lot." This seemingly fleeting interest turned into a passion that Jarell says the whole family supports. "When I realized that she was taking it so seriously, I had to make sure that I was supporting her," he says. "From my wife and I down to all of our other children, it's a joint effort from the whole household." Though some people may be concerned about a 6-year-old's affinity for blood and gore, Dakota says that she has always known that any of the scary characters she saw on TV or at amusement parks were fake. "When she was going on five years old we went to the [International Makeup Artist Tradeshow] in Los Angeles," Jarell says. "When we were there, they were doing demos of zombies and other pretty scary characters, but I always made it a point to let her know that they weren't real." Special effects makeup is something Dakota has made clear she's "always known how to do," and her current goal is to become the best makeup artist in the world. For now, Dakota is looking forward to an upcoming trip to Disney with her family, where she'll be recreating a Moana look. She's given the rest of the Patton's a role too: "Dad could be Cinderella," she says. With her makeup skills, it doesn't feel too far-fetched to think that Dakota may be running the entire Disney makeup department altogether later down the road. However, if one day she decides to change her mind, her parents will support her every step of the way. "Even though she's still young, if she came out and said 'I don't want to do makeup anymore,' we'd have her back completely," Jarell says. Ariel Baker is the assistant editor for POPSUGAR Beauty. A Love Letter to Dame Pat McGrath

Patricia Ann McGrath, First of your name (and talent, if we're being honest), revolutionary makeup artist, one of one. You continue to raise the bar, but our question is: how? In 2024, when people go viral every day, you managed to stop the world with your makeup design for the Maison Margiela haute couture spring/summer 2024 show. My Honest Thoughts on the New Wyn Skin Tint by Serena Williams

Serena Williams: Tennis champion, certified nail technician (yes, really), and now beauty-brand founder. On April 3, Williams announced the launch of her new makeup line, Wyn Beauty, revealing an entire collection of products for eyes, lips, and face. Among a bevy of lip colors, eyeliners, and mascara, the lineup also includes the Hydrating Skin Enhancing Tint SPF 30 ($29) and the MVP: Most Versatile Pigment Multifunction Lip & Cheek Color ($21) - two of Wyn Beauty's hero products. The product that caught my attention immediately was the skin tint. From the chartreuse packaging to the impressive 36 shades that the line offers and the radiant finish that it promises, I knew I had to get my hands on it ASAP. Keep reading for my thoughts on the latest offerings from Serena Williams's makeup line. About the Wyn Beauty Hydrating Skin Enhancing Tint SPF 30 The skin tint comes in 36 shades to suit a range of skin tones. The formula has buildable light coverage with a radiant finish. The packaging comes with a pump applicator for easy use. Standout ingredients include SPF 30, glycerin, and urea, which provide sun protection, hydrate, and moisturize, respectively. What I Like About the Wyn Beauty Hydrating Skin Enhancing Tint SPF 30 While packaging does matter to me, it's not typically the first thing that draws me to a beauty product. However, with this skin tint, not only is the color extremely eye-catching, but the packaging is smooth plastic, meaning I can just throw it into my purse and apply it in a car if needed, without worrying about it breaking. As for the formula itself, I found it to be lightweight and offer a gorgeous glow. Since this is a skin tint, the shade ranges are a bit more flexible. Two shades could work for me: 315 Curiosity and 340 Flow. I opted for the lighter shade as most days I just throw on a bit of bronzer to bring warmth back to the skin, but I also found that this product oxidized and ended up being my perfect match. So, if you're also in between shades, my tip is to go for the lighter one. How to Use the Wyn Beauty Hydrating Skin Enhancing Tint SPF 30 Like my other complexion products, I applied this tint to my face using a brush, blending it using short, swiping motions. Though I prefer this method, the formula is light enough to use your fingers or a beauty sponge without it feeling too heavy on your hands. I used about four pumps to cover my entire face, but if you just want a hint of glow, about half that amount should work. What to Consider About the the Wyn Beauty Hydrating Skin Enhancing Tint SPF 30 At this point, celebrity beauty brands need to be perfect right out of the gate, and honestly, Serena Williams and her team did a fantastic job with this tint. Like the brand says, it has light coverage, leaning more sheer. Even with a second layer, my blemishes were visible through the makeup. While not a deal-breaker for me, if you have acne or any other spots that you want to cover up, you'll likely need to rely more on your concealer. As of right now, this is the only base product in the line, so if you're looking for full coverage, this product may not be for you. However, if you want an easy, wearable tint, you can't go wrong. Where Is the Wyn Beauty Hydrating Skin Enhancing Tint SPF 30 Available? The full Wyn Beauty line will be available in stores and online at Ulta Beauty on April 7. These Famous Men Are Challenging Gender Norms Around Nail Art

As the conversations around beauty have evolved, so have the people who are actively claiming their places in the beauty community. From the rise of acne advocates to the normalization of traditional face tattoos in media, what was once an intentionally exclusive community has grown to include people from all walks of life. Nowhere is that more apparent than with the rise of the "menicure." Men wearing nail polish was popularized in the '70s and '80s when musicians like Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and Robert Smith, all had manicures as a part of their aesthetics, but men's nail art actually dates back much further than that. "A number of Old Kingdom (c. 2575-2150 BCE) elite tomb chapels include scenes of men receiving nail treatments," Elizabeth Frood, associate professor of Egyptology at the University of Oxford, previously told PS. Performers like A$AP Rocky and Bad Bunny have made nail art a part of their signature styles, proving to naysayers there is no gender binary in beauty, especially in the nail space. With that, there has also been a rise in brands created by celebrity men. Machine Gun Kelly revealed that he was working on his own nail-polish brand, Un/Dn Laqr, in April 2021. Shortly after, Harry Styles announced the launch of his nail-polish line, Pleasing, in November. Tyler the Creator became the latest to throw his hat into the beauty game with the launch of Golf le Fleur, which features three nail polishes, in December of the same year. We're seeing men experiment with their nails outside of the entertainment industry. Dwyane Wade's nails were a topic of discussion when he wore a black-and-red Miami Heat-themed manicure during his Hall of Fame induction ceremony in January 2024. Recently, football player Caleb Williams was spotted with pink nails as he supported his USC schoolmates and not long after, Duke University basketball player Jared McCain made a TikTok video addressing negative comments he received about his painted nails at games. Because there has been so much inspiration going around as of late, we rounded up the best male celebrities that you can follow to recreate their looks.
