House of the Dragon took the TV world by storm when it premiered in 2022. The series serves as a Targaryen prequel to Game of Thrones, picking up almost 200 years before the events of the original show. The story follows the fall of House Targaryen, which is split over who should assume the throne following the death of King Viserys. Viserys left the throne to his eldest child, Rhaenyra (and her sons), but questions over Rhaenyra’s validity as a female ruler (and some meddling from Viserys’ second wife, Alicent) led Viserys younger son Aegon to usurp the throne.
A shocking death at the end of Season 1 solidified the all-out war that Game of Thrones viewers knew was coming, and Season 2 picks up in the thick of the action. The storyline sets up the impending tragic ending that will befall the Targaryens, underscoring the inevitable, endless outcome of most cycles of destruction. The series – led by Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, and Olivia Cooke – was just renewed for a third season.
