The Sims 4 will FINALLY introduce polyamory in free update

The newest Sims 4 expansion pack is all about ROMANCE! Called Lovestruck, the pack’s big features will include a dating app, turn-ons and turn-offs, and different romantic relationship dynamics, along with a whole new world to explore. But the dating-themed perks won’t be limited to the expansion; there’s a patch coming for all Sims 4 players timed to the pack’s release, and it will introduce polyamory features! At long last!

The official Sims blog described the new Romantic Boundaries system, which will be customizable for all Sims and will separate out physical and emotional exclusivity.

Free for all players is the new Romantic Boundaries system that will allow you to customize your Sim’s experience with boundaries and jealousy. You can now define how your Sims approach romantic relationships in terms of physical and emotional romantic exclusivity. This allows for Sims to date multiple Sims without impact to other relationships.

Players have been asking for some sort of polyamory features for decades now, so it’s great that this will finally exist. Previous updates have allowed players to define their Sims’ romantic and sexual orientation and their gender expression. It’s another step in making The Sims 4 more realistic.

Sims have been notoriously jealous in romantic relationships since the days of the original Sims game. In The Sims 2, for instance, if Sim A had a crush on Sim B (even if they were not in a relationship!), they would get jealous if Sim B WooHoo’d with Sim C while they were all on the same lot (not even directly in front of Sim A!). Subsequent games have toned down this romantic jealousy, but it does make casual dating difficult in The Sims. And having a Sim polycule? Practically impossible without mods!

(Of course, that never stopped us Johnny Smith-Ophelia Nigmos-Ripp Grunt polyamory shippers — shoutout to the 2008 Sims 2 LiveJournal scene.)

The Sims 4: Lovestruck will be available on July 25, with the patch also dropping sometime around then.
