The figurative sandbox of freedom that is your weekend approaches, so it’s time to fill your inventory with stuff to do. Personally, I’m leaning pretty heavily into buying that 87% off Far Cry 6twice—the plan being to gift one to a mate and then take advantage of the stellar co-op campaign. Self-serving presents aside, I’m still all about Dragon’s Dogma 2, even though I’m on the other side of the credits. Game of the month for me.
In retro news, I’m celebrating the 21st birthday of the Gameboy Advance SP, the flip-top bestest version of the GBA SKUs. Debuting at a launch price of almost 200 dollarydoos, it would go on to ship a whopping 43.57M units before being discontinued in 2009. My fondest memory of my SP: using it in conjunction with a GameCube Link Cable to play asymmetrical multiplayer in Pac-Man Vs. all night long.
Why am I featuring this? Well, because today’s the 11 year anniversary of the 3DS original and I’m all nostalgic. Also, ghostbusting as Luigi is a basically timeless concept.
DD2 is a retelling and reimplementation of all of those wonderful ideas from the 2012 cult-classic, including an awesome dynamic world and some of the best combat in the genre. But fair warning: it’s not the most optimised game on PC right now.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is both respectful of the series that came before it while also giving it the modern update it needed with new gameplay, depth of character, and a beautiful look. Toys for Bob just gets Crash. 8/10, great.
The combat system here is quite fun, and figuring out the best course of action to exploit weak points, knock an enemy unconscious, and then unload on them remains satisfying. I found myself more invested in the multiple stories this time around too.
