Reese Witherspoon Working on Legally Blonde TV Series With Amazon

Reese Witherspoon is partnering with Amazon to create a Legally Blonde TV series, according to Deadline.

Details about its plot are being kept secret for now, but we do at least know that it will be written by The O.C. and Gossip Girl’s Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. They are serving as executive producers through their company, Fake Empire, alongside Marc Platt and Hello Sunshine’s Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter. Hello Sunshine, Amazon MGM, and Fake Empire are all producing.

Legally Blonde may soon be returning as a TV show.

The site says that Amazon is also interested in exploring an additional spinoff series based on Witherspoon’s law-learning lead, though those plans are still in the idea stages. It’s unclear if the actress would reprise her role as the franchise’s pink star, Elle Woods.

Legally Blonde originally released with Witherspoon in 2001 and has gone on to become a classic for 2000s film fans. In addition to spawning a sequel – subtitled Red, White & Blonde – in 2003, the series eventually went on to receive a highly regarded musical adaptation. In 2009, a TV spin-off called Legally Blondes aired on Disney Channel.

With the original project now nearly 23 years old and nostalgia-focused follow-ups continuing to pop up across entertainment, it’s no surprise to see more Legally Blonde on the way.

Amazon was reportedly considering reboots of classic projects like Robocop, Pink Panther, Legally Blonde, and more as early as last year. At the time, the company was in talks to remake the inspiring Witherspoon comedy, though, again, it’s unclear if that will be the case for this new TV series. There’s also Legally Blonde 3, which is in the works with Witherspoon but currently without a date.
