Nintendo announced Sunday that it’s holding its next Nintendo Direct on Aug. 19 but told viewers not to expect game announcements or news on the Nintendo Switch successor, also known as the Switch 2.
“Join us tomorrow, August 19 at 3pm PT, for a tour of the Nintendo Museum that’s scheduled to open during the fall of 2024 in Kyoto, Japan,” Nintendo posted from its X account. “The Nintendo Museum Direct livestream will last roughly 10 minutes.”
But it quickly followed up with a caveat: “Please note that there will be no game announcements or mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during this presentation.” It’s the classic case of expectation setting. Nintendo knows that its players are waiting eagerly for any piece of news about its next console, and it wants folks to know they won’t find it here. A bummer, indeed, but it would be much worse for players if there were no details on what to expect. (Of course, why would you expect Switch 2 news at the museum tour? Unknown!)
The Nintendo Museum tour, however, sounds fantastic. Nintendo announced in 2021 that it intended to turn its Nintendo Uji Ogura Plant in Kyoto, Japan into a museum designed “to showcase the many products Nintendo has launched over its history,” it said in a news release. The original building was constructed in 1969 to manufacture playing cards and Hanafuda cards, as well as a “customer service center for product repairs,” Nintendo said.
Nintendo has only shared in-progress renderings of the new Nintendo Museum, so Monday’s tour will be the first in-depth look. Like Nintendo said, it’s expected to open in the fall.
