James Gunn Shoots Down Clone Rumor: ‘The Primary Protagonist of Superman Is, Shockingly, Superman’

Director and DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn has shut down another Superman rumor, this one being that the upcoming reboot will feature a clone version of Clark Kent.

The comic book movie big wig spoke about the film’s heroes and villains in a post on Threads, clarifying that its set-up will be far simpler than some have been led to believe. It’s only the latest rumor Gunn has closed the book on, reminding superhero fans that they shouldn’t believe anything they read unless they see it come directly from him.

“The primary protagonist of Superman is, shockingly, Superman. The main villain of Superman is, shockingly, Lex Luthor,” Gunn said. “I don’t know where all the stuff is coming from that it’s something other than this. There are so many stories coming out every day it’s difficult to deal with and everytime I strike something down I’m giving it attention.”

Rumors seem to stem from social media superhero fan CanWeGetSomeToast, who has leaked comic book information in the past. In a post shared with their subscribers a few days ago, they teased that the Superman reboot film would feature a clone storyline that sees the Man of Steel going toe-to-toe with Ultraman.

While many latched on to the news as truth, others, like Reddit user superking22, predicted that it wouldn’t take long for Gunn to chime in.

“James gonna debunk that like the plague,” they said.

“I don’t know why anyone would post this knowing how willing Gunn is to debunk things,” clownbaby4_ added.

In a follow-up Threads post, Gunn replied to a fan, teasing that DC is “almost ready” to reveal more about its film to the world even though there’s still a lot of work to do. We still have yet to see a full look at star David Corenswet suited up in the hero’s iconic red and blue outfit.

“And I’m almost ready to show it to you (even though we’re probably only 18% or so through it,” Gunn said.

Superman is currently set to speed into theaters on July 11, 2025 and stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
