The Penguin looks like a heaping helping of Gotham City mob drama

September is not too far away, and The Penguin, Max’s The Batman spinoff TV series, seems to know it. A new trailer for the show gets right down to it in a way that previous teases avoided: This is a cutthroat mafia succession story set in the dark and oily Gotham City showcased in Matt Reeves’ Robert Pattinson-led 2022 film.

The Batman star Colin Farrell now has a whole cast to strive against in his quest to fill the power vacuum following the death of boss Carmine “The Roman” Falcone — and it’s a who’s who of Gotham City mafia figures from the most influential mafia-focused Batman books. Clancy Brown plays Salvatore Maroni, the guy who threw acid in Harvey Dent’s face; Michael Kelly plays Johnny Vitti, Falcone’s nephew and enforcer introduced in Batman: Year One; and Michael Zegen plays Alberto Falcone, a major player in Batman: The Long Halloween. Finally, Cristin Milioti plays a woman who appears to be Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot’s biggest rival for power, Sophia “Gigante” Falcone, the daughter of The Roman.

We’ll see who comes out on top — and whether Batman has anything to say about it — when The Penguin premieres on the Max streaming service in September
