Letter: Here’s how to curb bosses’ pay, prime minister

Regarding your news story “Sunak urges bosses to curb their pay and look after staff (Report, November 16), if the prime minister is serious about this I have a couple of suggestions for him.

First, the stick: when a company’s senior executives earn more than 20 times that of the lowest paid in the company, impose a tax on the company equal to the amount by which the earnings of each of those individuals exceeds, say, £500,000.

Now, the carrot: when a company pays a bonus out of profits which is distributed equitably among the staff, the bonus will be tax free for the recipient to the extent that it does not exceed 10 per cent of salary or £5000, whichever is less.
