Letter: Beyond the Fringe

Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England, says that “it’s too soon to declare victory” in the battle against inflation (Report, February 3). The latest bank base rate rise, a looming recession and a cost of living crisis remind me of that Peter Cook sketch: “We need a futile gesture at this stage. It’ll raise the whole tone of the war.”
