Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was hospitalized on Sunday “for symptoms suggesting an emergent bladder issue,” a Pentagon spokesperson said in a statement.
It comes a month after Austin’s last hospital stay, for complications from prostate cancer surgery that he kept hidden from the White House.
Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary, said that while Austin is in the hospital this time, he will continue to work until further notice.
“The Deputy Secretary is prepared to assume the functions and duties of the Secretary of Defense, if required,” he continued. “Secretary Austin traveled to the hospital with the unclassified and classified communications systems necessary to perform his duties.”
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
