Does Stress Really Make Your Hair Turn Gray?

People have been blaming stress for their gray hair for ages. Whether it's from parenthood, a job, or the normal ups and downs of life - stress is often a factor many associate with their gray hair. We've all seen people in power, such as presidents, start their term with their natural hair color, only for it to make way for silver by the end of their term. "The medical term for graying is canities," trichologist Bridgette Hill, WTS, tells PS. "There is a growing curiosity in the science and medical community for study of the hair follicle," she says. "Graying is the loss of melanin in the hair shaft. Melanin is the term used to describe natural pigments found in most organisms." Going gray is a part of the natural aging process for some, but can stress contribute to the early onset? To find out once and for all if there's a connection, we tapped some experts. Ahead, trichologists help us understand if stress can really make your hair turn gray or if there are other factors at play here. Does Stress Make Your Hair Gray? In short, yes, stress can turn your hair gray - but not in the way you might think. Whether you're dealing with acute stress, chronic stress, or even psychological stress, there's a chance that it can be the cause of your graying hair. "Hair that has already grown out of the follicle won't change color due to stress or any other external factors," board-certified trichologist Helen Reavey says. "However, oxidative stress can cause any new growth to come in 'gray.' Oxidative stress triggers the body's production of free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cells, including those responsible for producing melanin in hair follicles." Hill explains that the gray coloring of a hair fiber is a result of some melanocyte activity (the cells that produce melanin), and the white coloring of a hair fiber is the complete absence of all melanin and melanocyte activity. As we age, hair follicles naturally begin to produce less melanin. This makes the hair grow translucent, without any pigment, appearing white. According to healthcare education company StatPearls, when the body is under stress, the hormone cortisol is released throughout the body, even the hair follicles. Once inside the hair follicle, Hill says the stress hormone causes the melanocytes in the dermal papilla - which houses all the cells that determine hair's characteristics, per the Journal of Dermatological Science - to die. "The cortisol causes the melanocytes to replicate more rapidly into pigment cells, permanently killing off all the melanin-producing cells from the dermal papilla, creating a white or gray hair fiber formation," Hill says. It's important to remember that going gray is a natural part of aging that everyone will likely go through eventually. If you're noticing more grays accompanied by stress, making some life changes may be able to help. Sydney Wingfield has been a freelance writer in the beauty and wellness space for six years. The Summer Fridays Jet Lag Eye Serum Helps Me Fake a Full Night’s Sleep

As a millennial who likes to pretend she's part of the Gen Z crowd (at least when it comes to my outfits on a Friday night at the bar), I'm very aware that I'm aging. Gracefully, of course, but that doesn't mean I don't occasionally wish I could stop time (if only to combat the gray hair and wrinkles already cropping up). There are a few beauty products I rely on to help me look (and feel) my best, and one of the brands I continually find myself turning to is Summer Fridays. If you're new to the brand, the first thing I need to say to you is how?! (Heavy on the exclamation point.) Every product I've tried thus far has been an instant favorite. Whether it's the Lip Butter Balm with a cult following or the editor-loved tinted lip oils, the products are chic and work hard to make me look just a little bit better. The brand's Jet Lag Mask is my go-to whenever I'm having issues with dry, irritated skin, so when I heard it was dropping an eye-serum version of the same product, aptly named the Jet Lag Overnight Eye Serum ($46), I was eager to get my hands on it. After testing it just once and waking up looking like a million bucks, I knew it was a winner. While I don't plan to skip my upcoming Botox appointment for my ever-worsening crow's-feet, with time, this serum may end up giving my injector a run for her money. Keep scrolling to read my full review of the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Overnight Eye Serum and find out why it's landed a permanent spot in my nighttime skin-care routine. About the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Overnight Eye Serum This product is an overnight eye serum that promises to hydrate and minimize fine lines. It's formulated for all skin types. The key ingredients include glycerin for hydration; retinol and retinyl linoleate, a naturally derived pro-retinol, to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; and licorice-root extract to combat puffiness. It's cruelty-free and formulated without parabens, phthalates, and sulfates. It contains less than one percent synthetic fragrance. What I Like About the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Overnight Eye Serum The Summer Fridays Jet Lag Overnight Eye Serum isn't exactly what I thought it would be, just based on the name alone. Although it's touted as a serum, it's a bit thicker in consistency, but don't let that scare you. It still manages to feel lightweight, and it blends into skin easily without leaving behind a heavy residue. The formula is gentle, hydrating, and, most importantly for me, nonirritating. Recently, I've noticed tiny red dots appearing around the corners of my undereyes. While I was originally worried that the retinol in this product would exacerbate the issue, it seemed to do the opposite. While I normally wake up in the morning with puffy undereyes (OK, puffy everything), I found that the morning after I tested this product for the first time, my face looked a lot better. How to Use the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Overnight Eye Serum The brand recommends applying a small amount of product around the contour of each eye in the evening. I like keeping my eye serum in the fridge to make application feel even more luxurious. After cleansing my face at night and patting it dry, I apply this product before any other product in my skin-care routine. I take the tube and apply two or three small dots of the product underneath each eye, and then I use my ring finger to tap the product into my skin lightly, working my way outward and adding a little above my eye as well. What to Consider Before Trying the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Overnight Eye Serum One thing to note about this product is it's not cheap (but as they say, neither are you). Priced at $46 for half an ounce, it's one of the more expensive eye products I've tested. However, while half an ounce isn't a lot of product, luckily a little goes a long way. Additionally, this product is recyclable after you discard the cap. Where the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Overnight Eye Serum Is Available The Summer Fridays Jet Lag Overnight Eye Serum is available from the brand's website and Sephora. 13 of the Best Extra-Deep Sofas That Are Cozy and Stylish

A comfortable couch is the anchor of any home, and if you have the space, an extra-deep sofa is the way to go. It's so luxurious to lie back and cuddle up without needing an ottoman to rest your feet. An extra-deep sofa is perfect for families and binge-watchers alike - or anyone who prioritizes comfort and a lounge-worthy experience. To help you find the perfect roomy sofa for your apartment or house, interior design expert Gil Walsh of GW Interiors told POPSUGAR her expert tips on the qualities to look for during your search. Why Buy an Extra-Deep Sofa? A deep sofa not only makes your living space feel cozier, but it also serves as a functional piece of seating. "Taller people appreciate extra-deep sofas as they are able to sit more comfortably given their height and length of their legs," Walsh explains. Extra-deep couches are also worth the splurge for those with a habit of sleeping on the sofa and, according to Walsh, "anyone that wants a supreme amount of space to lounge on and has a large enough to house an oversized sofa without it looking out of place." What to Look For When Buying a Deep Couch There are many key factors to consider when investing in furniture, most notably size, fabric, style, function, and cost. For an extra-deep couch, Walsh recommends one with a seat depth of more than 25 inches. "But be mindful of the height," she warns. "If you're on the taller side, be sure the sofa isn't close to the ground, which would make it difficult for you to get on and off." When considering fabrics, first you need to determine how you plan to use the sofa and where it will be placed in your home. "Luxurious textures and blends like velvet and blended wools are best for seldom use. If you have children or pets, a durable performance fabric is your best option. Fade-resistant fabrics hold up well when the sofa is in the path of direct sunlight," Walsh explains. If you're planning on having frequent movie nights on your deep-seated couch, we suggest sticking to upholstered fabrics that are easy to keep clean. Walsh has some best practices for keeping your furniture in tip-top shape for a long time. "For upholstered sofas, vacuum them regularly to remove surface soil and dust," she says. "This prevents them from becoming embedded into the fibers. Gently blot any spills immediately with a clean folded towel. Avoid placing your sofa in direct sunlight as it can cause the fabric to fade or fray, unless you have performance fabric that is made to withstand the power of sunlight." With Walsh's tips in mind, we found 13 of the best extra-deep sofas on the market, many of which are on sale. Our top choice is the editor-favorite Albany Park Kova Pit Sectional Sofa, but there's something for everyone ahead. - Additional reporting by Angela Elias and Kyley Warren Related: The 13 Most Stylish Coffee Tables From West Elm
